What Is the New England Weavers' Seminar (NEWS)?
New England Weavers' Seminar (NEWS) is an organization of many weaving guilds in the New England area. These guilds combine their resources to produce a 4-day weaving and fiber conference every "odd" year.
Old friends gather to celebrate their love of fiber and weaving and to meet new friends.
The conference features some 40 to 45 workshops and classes given by internationally known faculty. A class in beginning weaving is offered. Other classes and workshops are for novice to experienced weavers. A limited number of grants are available, see the website for details.
All members of participating guilds are invited to submit items to the juried Gallery and Fashion shows where both functional and purely decorative items are featured. Entries are eligible for any number of awards, many of which include cash prizes and gift certificates.
Member guilds offer special exhibits, often with interesting and unusual themes. A number of vendors from all over the country participate and offer their goods and services to conference participants.
NEWS is attended by over 250 registered participants. The exhibits, vendor areas and evening addresses are open, for free, to the public. The next conference will be July 13h through 16th, 2017 at Smith College in Northampton MA. Registration information will be distributed in January 2017 and available online.
